Three Must-Have Sweater Styles for Winter

The temperatures have dropped and that chilly, snow-filled air has made its grand entrance. With winter fashion comes sweaters and cozy knits, but with all the different types of sweaters out there it can be difficult to narrow it down to what ones your closet needs. Here are our three must-have sweaters for winter, plus a simple styling tip for each!

The Oversized Cardigan

This is your classic, go-to cardigan. It typically features a open front and it has a more oversized fit with a longer length. These cardigans are perfect for layering in the winter and can easily add some dimension and texture to your outfit.

A favorite way to style a boyfriend cardigan is with a basic tee and unique pants. Either mom jeans, linen, or plaid pants for a cute and winter-ready look. To really take it to the next level, you can’t go wrong with a cute felt hat.

Fitted & Flattering

This sweater is somewhat self-explanatory as this style of sweater is fitted and so flattering. These sweaters pair perfectly with jeans, skirts, or under dresses. We love that this sweater style comes in a variety of textures and knits, such as a chunky knit, a ribbed knit, or even a super soft fine knit. This type of sweater is important to have for the more professional or fancier events you might have this winter because the fitted style makes it feel more polished.

Because this style of sweater is so chic and sophisticated, it’s very simple to style! Simply pair it with your favorite pants (or skirt) and booties. We especially love a wide-leg pant style to compliment the fitted sweater. It’s an easy throw-on-and-go outfit that looks polished and stunning every single time.

Cropped & Oversized

It’s no secret: oversized and cropped sweaters are in and it’s easy to see why. Nine times out of ten, an oversized sweater gives off an effortless, ‘I woke up this way’ breezy style. The cropped detail is just the icing on the cake and, contrary to what many believe, can be very flattering!

When styling a cropped sweater grab your favorite high-waisted pants or leggings, preferably something skinny or slimmer. It adds a balance to the oversized, loose sweater you have on top!

BONUS TIP: Sweaters can be tricky, especially when you see all these stunning outfits on Pinterest or Instagram and when you try to recreate them, you get a slouchy, frumpy look instead. When styling your sweater, think of the ‘Rule of Thirds.’ You don’t want your sweater to cut you in half. Either tuck your sweater in or pick a cropped sweater to pair with high-waisted jeans. (⅓ on top and ⅔ on bottom) Then finish off with a duster cardigan or long coat. (⅔ on top and ⅓ on the bottom) This simple math can really tweak the way your style your outfit and create a flattering silhouette!
